The narrator is the 16 year old daughter of a professor. In the beginning of the book, she finds several letters and a book. The book's pages are blank except there is a woodcutting of a dragon in the middle. When the daughter confronts her father, he unfolds the story of the book, the letters, and his belief that Vlad Dracula exists in present day.I loved the book. I thought that is was extremely mesmorizing. At first, I was scared to pick it up because it is 815 pages, but it didn't feel like it was that long at all. There were a few parts that went into the history of certain countries which was hard for me to follow, but the rest of the book was a page turner.
I would rate this book at 4.75/5 because there were a few parts about the different countries that I didn't really care for. Also, if you get the hard copy, there is a map that Trish says really helps to understand parts of the book.
Jacob is an 18 year old that was diagnosed with Aspergers at a very young age. His passion is forensics analysis, and has been known to crash a few crime scenes in his life. A murder happened in their town, and the authorities come to Jacob for help. His aspergers plays a huge role in his ability to help the police officers, and Jacob soon becomes the investigated instead of the investigator, but is Jacob really capable of commiting murder.I am in love with Jodi Picoult. I don't think that she has ever let me down. This book was written from the persectives of several different characters, not just Jacob. I really like reading books that are set up like that because I want to know what everyone is thinking/feeling. If I didn't have a child, I would have finished this in a couple of days. At times I had to force myself to put the dang thing down.
I would rate this 5/5; love love loved it.
You can read my sister's overview of the book here. This book gave me extremely heavy boots. In the beginning, I had a really hard time getting into the book. I kept telling myself that anytime it would get really good. I know that my sister said that it wasn't for everyone, but she has only let me down once (Bel Canto). About half way through I was utterly confused. I kept calling Trish to ask her questions, and she kept saying "it will all come together". It did, and I ended up loving the book to pieces. I found myself mad at times, sad at times, and happy at times. Like other's have said, this book has so much feeling attached to it. The first half wasn't bad, it just wasn't what I had anticipated. I don't like having so many unanswered questions up front. After reading, and then going back and re-reading some parts, I truely loved the book and loved the way things unfolded for Oskar and his family. By the end, my boots were a lot less heavy.
I give this book a 5/5, enough said!
This post is for you Michelle. I really didn't want to do this, but you put pressure on me. This whole book review thing is Trish's love, not really mine. It is good to give everyone input on what I have read though; I secretly enjoyed it a little. The one I am reading now is going to probably get a really bad review.
Do you stick to your books hoping that in the end you won't be so disappointed, or are you able to put a book down half way through and not give it a second thought?

I think you know the answer to this but I usually stick a book through. There have only been a very few that I've abandoned to never pick up again. Sometimes, though, the timing isn't right so I'll put it away for a while.
I'm so glad you liked The Historian and EL&IC! I was so worried that you wouldn't like EL&IC but I had a tough time getting into the book as well but just fell in love. Hard. And I'm freakin' sorry that Bel Canto sucked so hard for you. :P
I have only ever stopped reading one book. A Million Little Pieces by James Fry. I really couldn't get myself to like it at all.
I loved EL&IC. It does give you heavy boots though huh?
I have only read one Jodi Picoult book. My Sister's Keeper. I really liked it. I will have to give House Rules a go. Sounds interesting. I enjoy learning about Autism. If you like it too, I read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time. I could send it your way if you are interested. Just let me know.
The Historian sounds pretty interesting. Did some of it take place in Transylvania? That is modern day Romania where Matt went on his mission. He got to tour "Dracula"s castle.
Anyway, an hour later. Thanks for the post! More! More!
I loved reading your reviews! I'm not a good reader at all, but always wish I read more. After reading a few reviews, and hearing they're making a movie, I'm going to start Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.
I also LOVE Jodi Picoult. In college I read The Pact, recommended by your mom and sister. I've never read a book so fast. If you haven't read that one, definitely do. I love love loved it.
Brooke! You're outpacing your sister in the reading this year (well... at least very close). I love Jodi Picoult too... favorite was The Pact. I have a book on my shelf just waiting to be read, but am focused on Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, oh... and scrapbooks. yeah, scrapbooks. :-)
Both the Historian & EL&IC are on my to read list. I need to buckle down and just do it. I have been slowly working my way through the same book that I have been reading since Thanksgiving. Embarrassing, I know.
*Trish: Yes, I really enjoyed it. There aren't many books that you recommend that I don't like, so please, keep recommending books to me.
*Michelle: Yes, love Jodi Picoult, I have read at least 7 of her books. The Historian traveled into Romania, but wasn't set there. I touched on some of the culture which was really interesting.
*Rachel: I used to have a hard time reading, but it gets easier the more that you do it. It also helps when you have good books to read. I hope that you like EL&IC, jsut remember that it will make sense eventually.
*Mom: Yea, scrapbooks, I need to get there soon before I fall 27 years behind.
*Elise: You will more than likely enjoy both books. Don't feel bad about your current book, I read "The Book Theif" and it took me almost a year. Once Hudson gets older it is a lot easier to read (I think).
I finished EL&IC.... one of the best books I have EVER read.
